Expesite will be releasing VisionFM 13 by the end of April 2012. This is our first major release for VisionFM in nearly two years due to enormous effort invested in VisionMSI and the new drawing viewer.

Within the application we have added over fifty new features, where most were driven by our clients’ business needs. The most notable enhancements focused on Preventive Maintenance, Environmental Services, and Room Surveys. These enhancements provide users with robust features to define their service levels and give them the ability to perform audits to ensure those service levels are being met. Another major enhancement our users will notice is the extended documentation throughout the application.

In addition, we now have nine training manuals focused on each user’s role within the system. We are excited to bring you this new version of VisionFM and we have been working with several carefully chosen businesses that are testing copies of the beta release. The initial feedback on version 13 has been outstanding.

The workforce is clearly aging, “Traditionalist” and “Baby Boomer” aged associates are still in the workforce and changing the way employers deal with a multitude of issues. Employers now employ four generations that work side-by-side: Traditionalists (63 & over), Baby Boomers (43-62), Generation X (28-42), & Generation Y (27 & younger). Each group brings its own characteristics to the workplace based on their own work ethic, work behaviors, life issues & expectations.

More than half of America’s workforce is over 40; companies must consider what will happen when a significant number of employees opt for retirement. Many companies focus on developing their workforce but few concentrate on the issues arising from associates retiring or older workers remaining on the job. Knowledge management and workforce planning is key in preparing for the exit of these people who take with them the familiarity of the organizational history, the progression of internal processes, client relationships and other critical information. This “lost knowledge” threatens business growth, sustainability & continuity.

The following are a few strategies that companies may deploy to prepare for the exit of potential retirement age employees:

• Analyze: Review your employment data & determine what your exposure may be for loss of employees due to retirement. Examine past retirement rates with your organization to understand what percentage may opt for retirement and when in your particular industry or organization.

• Observe: Listen and watch for clues that may give hint to those considering retirement eligibility; use this knowledge to plan for succession & knowledge transfer.

• Communicate: Talk with those considering retirement – discuss work options and the benefits of continuing to work. Complete exit interviews to determine the prospect of their continued employment under different terms.

• Engage: Contemplate post-retirement consulting for those high performing associates whose skill set or knowledge can’t be easily transferred or is highly valued. An attractive option might be to provide “snowbird policies” that would allow retiring associates to work virtual or develop other work options for periods of time. Offer “un-retirement” parties to entice retirees to work part-time, temporary or consult to meet the company’s staffing needs.

• Sabbaticals: Once only common in academic arenas, other industries are now offering sabbaticals as an employee benefit to avoid employee burnout & enhance performance. Another strategy would be to offer a “Renewal” – a four to six week absence in which employees can enjoy their leisure activities, travel, relax or volunteer.

Organizations must be prepared to meet the demands of their organization which includes the older worker & consequences of that aging population. Your Human Resources representative can help you identify the disciplines, staffing management, employee development and creativity you need to sustain a resourceful & experienced workforce. Don’t delay, protect your most valuable asset today – your employees.

ENR is a magazine designed to inform construction industry professionals about news, events, and technologies that can help make their jobs more effective. In the March 12, 2012 edition of ENR, they published the results to the Hot Tech Topics survey. The survey was distributed in February targeting ENR’s biweekly readers of their Future Tech newsletter. The survey provided open ended questions that inquired about the best tech tools available to the construction industry and what would readers like to see in the future.

Due to Continued Growth, Expesite Relocates Toronto Office

Expesite will be relocating to a new office in Vaughan, Ontario. Our ongoing growth necessitated a larger office to accommodate for the new associates. This office will handle the increase in ever-growing demand from current clients and new clients that were generated over the last year. The strategic location will allow the company to better serve its growing clientele and tap the local talent pool in Toronto.
